Effective Innovation Process: Power of Micro User Interview Questions

Leaders often struggle to find time for detailed feedback, but gathering valuable insights doesn't require lengthy surveys or formal evaluations.
In fact, there’s an easy overlooked opportunity you can try tomorrow: asking simple questions during routine interactions with key stakeholders. These include brief check-ins, program-related events, and emails.
This small action can spark a cycle of improvement and innovation, highlighting issues that motivate your team to take action and enhance the lives of those you serve.

User Interview Questions for Your Innovation Process

These choice questions provide crucial insights into user satisfaction motivations and unique value propositions to guide improvements and innovations.
Assessing Satisfaction
These questions help measure overall satisfaction. They identify areas to improve and uncover changes that could greatly enhance their experience.

  • What specific changes — or problems if solved — would elevate your experience from good to exceptional (a 10/5 superlative experience)?

Understanding their “why”
These questions explore their core motivations and how they define success with your solution.

Improve Your User Interview Questions and Innovation Process

The below are some small steps you can take to keep yourself organized and build micro-feedback into a habit.
  • Few at a time. Consider the following questions that you can weave into daily interactions in just 5 or 10 minutes. No need to ask all of these at once. Weave them into multiple interactions when it feels natural, often at the start or end of the conversation.
  • Honesty. To get honest feedback, explicitly ask for brutal honesty and show gratitude, even for critical input. If needed, reframe the question around creating a "superlative" experience. This approach helps respondents feel they're contributing to improvement rather than criticizing, encouraging more candid responses.
  • Log. Maintain a simple spreadsheet or document to record responses. Include columns for the date, respondent, question asked, and their answer.
  • Reminders. Schedule regular prompts or notes at the top of a running agenda to ask these questions during meetings, calls, or via email.
  • Feedback Loop. When you implement changes based on feedback, let your stakeholders know. This encourages further engagement and demonstrates the value of their input.
